AI-enhanced white cane technology with real-time 3D environmental mapping for improved mobility and safety

About Aistin Smart Cane

Mobility Challenges in Everyday Environments

Blind and visually impaired individuals face significant challenges in navigation, including:

  • environmental hazards
  • limited spatial awareness
  • difficulty identifying objects and obstacles
  • dependence on external assistance
  • reduced access to real-time environmental information

While the traditional white cane remains the primary mobility tool, it provides limited information about surroundings beyond direct physical contact.

3D Perception-Enhanced Mobility

Aistin Smart Cane enhances the traditional white cane by adding real-time 3D environmental mapping capabilities.

The system generates an intuitive spatial representation of the surroundings, delivered directly through fingertip feedback.

This allows users to perceive nearby obstacles and spatial structures beyond the physical reach of the cane

Real-Time Environmental Mapping System

The system uses a combination of:

  • laser-based distance sensing
  • camera-based environmental scanning
  • onboard processing unit
  • accelerometer motion tracking
  • fingertip braille-style feedback matrix

Together, these components create a real-time "3D map of surroundings", updated as the cane is moved naturally.

Revolutionizing Mobility for the Visually Impaired

This video depicts a prototype demonstration.  Current development and testing are ongoing to expand system performance into real-world outdoor environments.

Intuitive, Non-Disruptive Design

Key User Experience Principles

  • no audio distraction
  • tactile fingertip feedback
  • minimal learning curve
  • natural sweeping motion usage
  • real-time environmental updates

The system provides spatial information through a tactile 3D Braille-like map at the fingertip clients' expectations.

Aistin Smart Cane is designed to function as a natural extension of the traditional white cane.

Enhancing Mobility in Real-World Environments

Improved Safety and Independence

Efficient, Scalable Hardware Architecture

Improved Safety and Independence

A major limitation of traditional mobility tools is the inability to detect elevated or non-ground-level obstacles.

Aistin Smart Cane addresses this by extending environmental awareness beyond ground-level detection.

Key benefits:

  • improved obstacle detection coverage
  • reduced collision risk
  • increased user confidence
  • greater independence in daily mobility together to provide our clients with comprehensive solutions that meet their unique needs.

The system is built using commercially available components:

  • laser modules
  • camera sensors
  • micro processing unit
  • braille-style actuator matrix
  • motion sensors

Designed for:

  • low-cost manufacturing
  • scalable production
  • energy efficiency (~1W power target)
  • long battery life (12+ hours usage)

Global Need & Technology Development

Millions navigate the world without full visibility.

Over 40 million people are blind globally, with over 200 million experiencing visual impairment. Most still rely on tools with limited environmental awareness.

There is a clear need for more advanced, accessible mobility solutions.

Assistive technology is evolving beyond basic detection.

Aistin Smart Cane introduces real-time spatial awareness through intuitive feedback.

Development is focused on expanding capabilities and enabling real-world deployment at scale.

Advancing Independent Mobility

Mobility is essential to independence and everyday life. We believe visually impaired individuals should have access to technology that improves safety, awareness, and confidence.

We are working with partners, including organizations and foundations supporting the visually impaired, to help bring practical, real-world mobility solutions into use.
